I've been growing food since I was a kid, and doing it for friends around Johnson City for the last several years.
I grew up in Nigeria, where a garden wasn't a hobby. It was part of how the house ran. My grandmother grew tomatoes, peppers, okra and greens in a plot behind her house, and I spent enough time in it that I stopped thinking of food as something that comes from a store.
When I moved to East Tennessee I had to relearn most of it. Different soil, different season, different problems. Clay instead of loam. A hard frost instead of a dry season. Blight showing up in the humidity every July like clockwork. It took a few bad years before I had a system that worked here.
Friends started asking. Then their friends. For the last few years I've been setting up and looking after gardens around Johnson City for people I know, without charging for it, and it got to the point where it needed to be an actual business or stop.
So here it is.
Why I do it this way
I don't do lawn care and I don't do landscaping. This is one thing, done properly. That's also why I don't supply the soil or the seed unless you ask me to. You should pick what your family eats, and you should know what's going into the ground your food grows in.
I work alone. When you hire me, the person who shows up is me, every time.
Where I work
Johnson City, Jonesborough, Elizabethton, Kingsport, Bristol, Gray, Piney Flats, and the surrounding area. Anything past about twenty minutes from Johnson City picks up a small travel charge.
The soil here can grow this
This one came out of a bed I planted this season. Same clay, same July humidity, same climate everyone in the valley is working with. The difference is the plan, not the dirt.
